Pieter Gabriëls
The European automotive market is undergoing the largest transition in its history. New Chinese manufacturers are entering the market at a rapid pace, distribution models are changing fundamentally, and dealer holdings face strategic choices that will determine their position for the next ten to twenty years. The central question is often not whether to partner with one or more Chinese brands, but which brand, under what conditions, and at what point in time. That may sound straightforward, but many have already paid a costly price in lessons learned.
This is precisely where Pieter Gabriels' expertise lies. With more than forty years of international experience in automotive distribution and over twenty years of intensive involvement with Chinese car manufacturers, he advises dealer holdings, importers, and OEMs on strategic positioning, distribution structures, and brand development. He combines in-depth knowledge of the European retail market with a strong understanding of Chinese business culture, decision-making, and long-term strategy.
Pieter was responsible for the preparation and European launch of the MG and MAXUS brands, and subsequently served as Vice President Europe at SAIC Motor, reporting directly to the board of directors in Shanghai. In that role, he developed and implemented complete distribution models for Europe, spanning sales and marketing, aftersales, logistics, finance, legal, and dealer development. As a result, he understands both the perspective of the European dealer holding and that of the Chinese manufacturer.
For dealer holdings, this means having an independent sparring partner who looks far beyond the appeal of a new brand's promises and models. Which manufacturer has sufficient financial strength, reliability, and a sustainable European strategy? Does the brand fit within the existing holding portfolio? What impact will a new dealership have on the value of the business, relationships with existing OEMs, and future market position? And what standing does the OEM have in China, and what is it permitted to do by the Chinese authorities?
Pieter is known for his pragmatic, results-driven approach. He brings structure and calm to complex decision-making, connects diverse interests, and translates strategic questions into concrete choices. His advice is independent, realistic, and always focused on sustainable value creation for shareholders, management, and dealer organisations. He only takes on engagements where there is no conflict of interest. Seek proper advice before making decisions — it will save considerable time, money, and focus.
